The Barbies that Inspired Margot Robbies Barbie Movie Press Tour Wardrobe Scarlette Magazine

The Day-to-Night Barbie had the doll stylishly transitioning from working her nine-to-five to going out at night, with her glamorous hair slicked back with a trail of voluminous curls behind her. Who better to be Barbie's first celebrity-inspired doll than supermodel and '60s icon Twiggy? Twiggy Barbie had the model's signature pixie with a deep side part and spidery lashes. Margot has another outfit change as the 1985 Day to Night Barbie while she attends the Seoul premiere of Barbie on July 2, 2023 in Seoul, South Korea. The actress attends the press conference for Barbie at Four Seasons Hotel Seoul as the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie on July 3, 2023 in Seoul, South Korea. Sporting Christian Louboutin heels and recreating the Enchanted Evening Barbie from 1960, the actress attends the Barbie premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 12, 2023 in London, England.

’13 Going on 30′ cast reunites for 20th anniversary

Inspired by the best-selling Barbie® doll that first made waves 30 years ago, the Barbie® Totally Hair™ heart-themed doll rocks her own hairstyle, hair texture and fashion look! The doll has 8.5 inches of extra-long playable hair and comes with 15+ additional pieces including 8 color change hair clips, styling accessories and an extra fashion. Barbie® doll has a petite body shape and comes with half-black, half-fantasy pink, blue and yellow colored hair. Kids will love creating different hairstyles and the endless styling possibilities! At a press call, Ms Robbie donned a classic black and white striped Hervé Léger dress – inspired by the very first Barbie, released in 1959. Though Robbie’s version was not crocheted wool, the black and white stripes are instantly recognisable as Mattel’s most iconic toy’s first ever outfit.

Besides designing a countless number of Barbie’s clothing and outfits, Spencer also designed outfits for the Ken, Skipper and Chelsea dolls as well. On March 9, 1959 (yes, she's Pisces girly), Barbie made her debut in the world. According to the History Channel, the doll was created when Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler found her daughter Barbara wanting to play with paper dolls over her baby dolls. Mattel modeled Barbie after the Lili doll, based on a German comic strip character and controversially known as a prostitute gag gift for bachelor parties. The company then bought the rights to Lili before making its own version and naming it "Barbie" in honor of Barbara. The doll, released in 1992, included ankle-long hair as one of its standout features.

Among the iterations of the iconic doll is “Totally Hair” Barbie, which, according to the Guinness World Records, is Mattel’s bestselling Barbie doll to date. Mattel had to switch their hair material to Saran after the Kanekalon manufacture discontinued production in 2017. Robbie has embraced her inner Barbie in every sense of the word, dressing like a different version of the iconic doll for each stop of the film’s press tour. Everything from the original Teenage Fashion Model Barbie from 1959 to the most recent Barbie Movie Barbie from 2023, it’s every girl’s dream wardrobe and Robbie executed it perfectly. In another partnership with a major fashion house, Barbie was dressed and designed by Rodarte. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy created outfits and styled Barbie from designs in their 2018 Paris Spring Couture collection, which featured ethereal sheer garments, floral themes, and butterflies woven throughout models' hair.

The polka-dot mini dress, designed by Valentino, although having a different fit from the original look, was a perfect representation of being both pink and fabulous. On April 25 Robbie attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas wearing a two-piece Prada bra and miniskirt in the iconic Barbie baby pink gingham pattern — the perfect tribute to Gerwig’s version of the iconic doll but with a modern twist. Complete with hot pink, polka-dotted Valentino mini-dress, iconic yellow handbag and white heels, Margot Robbie’s look for a photo call in Los Angeles (25 June) is reminiscent of a Pink & Fabulous Barbie from 2015.

Complete with a stained glass-esque minidress from Emilio Pucci, Chanel earrings, pink shoes and a cascade of crimped blond locks, Ms Robbie turned it out. ‘Earring Magic’ Barbie came complete with a chunky silver belt, pink pumps and – obviously – some gorgeous dangly earrings, all faithfully recreated. For the premiere of Barbie in México City, Robbie and Mukamal recreated an iconic 1992 Barbie look.

According to The Independent, Perkins designed the first Black Barbie with the help of a Black male hairdresser and a sculptor. The doll wore her hair in a voluminous Afro with bigger lips and a wider nose. The 40th-anniversary edition (pictured above) gives a subtle nod to the iconic Afro by putting Barbie's natural hair in a stunning structural updo. Robbie, with help from her stylist Andrew Mukamal, has created an entire Barbie themed wardrobe for the press tour of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie.

Margot Robbie is shown here in the Barbie movie in a plaid pink dress and had her very own 2023 Barbie created after her. And you can’t be the Totally Hair Barbie without having crimped, waist-length hair and hot pink earrings to tie the whole look together. Following the Naucalpan de Juarez premiere, Robbie attended a photo call in Mexico and decided to stick with the 90s theme, channelling the 1992 Totally Hair Barbie, in an Emilio Pucci mini dress. The look represents the 1992 Earring Magic Barbie, and although Robbie decided to opt out of the poofy, crimped hair, the dress did all the work and it did not disappoint. From the OG Barbie’s black and white striped swimsuit to a two-in-one reveal in the form of 1985’s ‘Day-to-Night Barbie’, Robbie has proved that this Barbie can serve looks. Her designs flowed with the decades and utilized all sorts of colors, spanned all types of occasions and included all sorts of hairstyles.

Kids and collectors can look forward to the debut of the Barbie Totally Hair 30th Anniversary doll collection this fall. Mattel is bringing back the iconic ankle-length hair, bold highlights, butterfly clips, and — of course — crimped hair. For Barbie's first foray into politics, she aimed big (as one always should) by running for president.

The Day-to-Night Barbie from 1985 was one doll, sold with two different outfits, a day look for Barbie to go to work in and a pink dress for Barbie to go party in at night. While this doesn't mark the first partnership with legendary fashion house Oscar de la Renta (the brand first designed outfits for already existing Barbies in 1985), this limited-edition Barbie is as chic as it gets. She had dark chocolate hair styled in a high updo accessorized with a tiara and a dark moody lip. In true '90s fashion, Totally Hair Barbie came with crimped hair cascading all the way down to the floor (the longest hair a Barbie's ever had). She had long platinum blonde hair gathered in a high-fashion ponytail with a sequined dress and feather boa.

Beverly Hills marked the beginning of the official Barbie movie press tour and Robbie did not disappoint. After the release of the Barbie movie trailer in May, fans noticed this obvious reference to Barbie’s iconic pattern and Robbie made sure to include it in her own Barbie wardrobe. For Barbie‘s world premiere in Los Angeles, Margot Robbie surprisingly ditched the pink in favour of a classic black gown echoing one of Barbie’s most iconic lewks.

The release also offered a variety of long hairstyles in different textures, with a blond and a brunette Barbie. The doll’s packaging also included a comb and styling gel to encourage people to create spiked, voluminous and versatile hairstyles. Although Barbie is best known for wearing pink dresses and heels, Teenage Fashion Model Barbie, the original Barbie, wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit with a perfectly-placed high pony and Robbie made sure to include every detail. The look couldn’t be complete without the iconic white cat-eye sunglasses with blue lenses and a pair of patent leather peep-toe mules and to finish it off Robbie even included the red nail polish as a final detail. The original doll stood at about 11.5 inches tall with bleached blonde hair tied in a low ponytail with curly fringe bangs.

The Seoul premiere of Barbie had fans truly gagged – in part, due to Margot’s double whammy, reversible outfit reveal. The look is in reference to a 1964 Barbie in the same outfit, though the doll didn’t come with Robbie’s fabulous heart-shaped quilt bag. In Seoul, Robbie donned a crystal-embellished skirt, blazer and top, complete with pillbox hat at a press conference – all from Moschino. Thanks to the stellar work of Andrew Mukamal, the celebrity fashion stylist working closely with Robbie, every single ‘fresh-out-the-plastic’ outfit on the tour has been nothing short of incredible. Some people commit to method acting, but when it comes to Margot Robbie, star of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming cultural phenomenon Barbie, method dressing is the new trend taking over the red carpet. When Spencer retired, a one-of-a-kind Carol Spencer doll was made in her honor.

Yamaguchi’s doll and the other dolls in the Inspiring Women Series are available now. Yamaguchi’s Barbie wears a figure skating dress reminiscent of the one she wore when she won her gold medal at the ‘92 Olympic Games in Albertville, France. She even holds a large bouquet, just like she did after she skated more than 30 years ago. Last, but not least, Robbie went all out for the London premiere, wearing a custom Vivienne Westwood gown representing the 1960 Enchanted Evening Barbie. Robbie returned to California on July 9 for the Los Angeles premiere, wearing her most extravagant Barbie look yet. Everything, form the yellow shoulder bag to the white heels, was a nod to the 2015 Pink and Fabulous Barbie.

Margot Robbie is moving closer to real-life Barbie doll status as she continues to pay sartorial tribute to Mattel’s most iconic toy on the film’s press tour. From 1961 to 1967, Barbie wore her hair in a voluminous bubble cut colored in different shades, such as this rich dark brunette. According to the company, the “Totally Hair” Barbie, released in 1992, sold more than 10 million dolls worldwide.

Being that this stop was at Bondi Beach, it would only be appropriate to wear a look inspired by Barbie’s most iconic swimsuit. Robbie wore a black-and-white striped Hérve Léger bandage dress, representing the 1959 Teenage Fashion Model Barbie. Here is a look at every Barbie doll that has inspired Robbie’s press tour wardrobe.
